New-U is a social enterprise with 3 main aims;
- To support long term unemployed 18-30 year olds by providing individualised work placements in our clothes loan and swap shop in Castle Mall, Norwich;
- To reduce the carbon footprint of the textiles industry by enabling the wider community to recycle and re-use quality clothes and accessories;
- To loan smart clothing and accessories to young people for any occasion
New-U is an independent social enterprise offering work experience opportunities to young people furthest from the labour market, via work placements in our clothes and accessories swap and loan shop in Castle Mall, Norwich. The shop operates on a donated and swap basis. Customers bring unworn and good quality pre-loved items of clothing and accessories into the shop and exchange for swap points. These points can be used to ‘purchase’ any item in our shop. We also run a free smart clothes loan scheme for 18-30 year olds needing a smart outfit for any occasion. Many of the young people who have completed work placements with us continue as volunteers and more than 5000 swaps took place in the first 12 months of opening. New-U is an ambitious project, we already work with referral organisations, local retailers and business and are keen to develop this further to enable us to open more shops, run upcycle workshops and events to promote sustainable fashion, provide a sense of wellbeing to the wider community and engage with even more young people to encourage social interaction, reduce anxiety and evidence transferable skills to future employers.
